Stroud’s most distinguished Citizen gets a face lift
The only public statue in Stroud dominates Rowcroft and is a statue of George Holloway MP for Stroud and the founder of Holloway Friendly.
His pioneering spirit set up various garment mills in the town and with his passion for social reform he devised a scheme to provide for his mill workers when they were unable to work due to sickness. The principles of his original scheme still remain today.
The statue is made of white Italian marble and has been undergoing further maintenance since the original restoration project in August 2004, exactly 110 years after its first unveiling.
The carved lettering on the plinth had faded over time so to make the inscription more visible a special paint had to be prepared to highlight these features.
As part of Stroud’s 700th anniversary celebrations people of Stroud were asked to identify who and what they associate most with their town. Their responses were reproduced in a splendid poster, basically the A to Z of Stroud, George Holloway featured under G.
The descendents of George Holloway still live in the area.
